How to Fix Your Internet Connectivity issues

Common Internet Connection Problems

Like all electronics and technology, there can be some connectivity issues. This can be frustrating, especially when you are trying to surf the web or play games. Here are some common problems and how to fix them.

Modem & Router Problems and How To Fix Them

Often times a lack of connection can mean that the router or modem are having a problem. This can be an easy fix.

First, take a look at your modem and your router. If the green lights are flashing, it means there is network traffic, which is great. However, if there are blinking orange lights, there could be an issue.

Restart your modem and router. This gives them the chance to start fresh. Once you have restarted, give them a few minutes to reestablish a connection with the Internet service provider.

If your Internet connection is still not working, plug an Ethernet cable directly from the modem to your computer. If it connects, then you know the router is your problem.

Viruses or Software Issues with a Specific Computer

If the Internet connection is giving you an issue on a specific device, then it could be a software problem on your computer or smart device. This could be due to a virus or malware. You can encounter these viruses through the wrong click on your browser, but don’t worry it is fixable.

If this is the problem, download anti-virus software and scan your computer. The software will be able to detect if there is a problem. You will then be able to clear it and make your computer healthy again.

Most Common Slow Connection Issues

As mentioned previously, if you overload your home WiFi network with too many devices, you will see a slowdown in your web performance. Each device, such as your computer, tablet, smart phone or smart home device, will affect the speed of your network. If you are having a slow connection, you need a higher bandwidth to prevent lag.

Here are some ways to fix your slow Internet connection:

  • Overload Router and Lack of Bandwidth – As stated above, try increasing your bandwidth if you are experiencing a slow connection and have many devices connected to your WiFi.
  • Distance – Your Internet signals have a specific range for how far they can travel. If you are not within this range you might get a weak signal, or no signal. You should also check for anything interrupting your signal such as a concrete floor, power surge or even a thunderstorm.
  • Peak Traffic Times – Depending on your Internet provider, at certain times during the day there may be more people attempting to access the network. This can cause a slower connection or give you difficulty connecting. If that is the case, talk to your service provider about how to fix the problem

Internet Servers are Down

Sometimes, you will try to fix your WiFi connection, only to find that the Internet Service Provider is having issues on their end. Call your provider to see if there is a service outage. If that is the case, you just have to wait for them to fix it.

If you visit one website and it is down, it might not be your connection, but rather the website could be down. Again, not your fault. Try visiting the website at a later time.

Make sure you always perform updates and restart your device to give it a fresh connection. The above tips should help you fix any connectivity issues and get you back online.
