Rogers to Offer Unlimited Data Wireless Plans

For the First Time in Canada – Rogers to Offer Unlimited Data Wireless Plans

June 13, 2019 – Toronto, Ontario – Roger communications have announced to introduce new plans that will bear no coverage charges in Canada. Furthermore, Roger also intends to launch a financing option for customers to afford smartphones.Unfortunately, the promoted unlimited plan has a specific set of limitations and even an additional overage fee. Customers are expected to experience reduced speed after exceeding the 10 GB quota. And people who are in immediate need to access high-speed data will have to buy 3GB for an added $15.

With slow and unlimited speed combo, users wouldn’t have trouble browsing the internet, engaging in social media platforms, sending emails, and streaming video content. And once the data cap hits the limit, many content creators and active users are left at the mercy of 3G connection from high packaged LTE speed.

CRTC Review

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently reviewed the state of the wireless mobile plans. It essentially examined the actions that could be taken to improve the quality of the service and set an affordable price for Canadians. Furthermore, the CRTC also devised a guideline that would require major wireless carriers to be on the same national networks as small carriers.

Although Rogers’ new wireless data plan is ideal for high-end users, consumer advocate groups such as OpenMedia has questioned the timing of the plan amidst CRTC evaluation of the wireless industry.

Potential Growth and Opportunities

Although the growth of the wireless industry has sky-rocketed in the last few years, the ratio of progress is still slow in some areas of the field. Wireless companies can either choose to entirely focus on profitability or pay some attention to the needs of the Canadians.

Comparatively, Americans enjoy a marginally less expensive wireless data plan, and Canadians should be able to enjoy the same competitive wireless mobile network system.

Competition

The day Rogers announced to offer unlimited data wireless plan, expectations were that Bell and Telus would follow the same course. Bells is pretty much offering the same package at $75 a month with ten gigs of high speed followed by reduced speed for exceeding the data limit.

Telus, However, has decided to go in a different direction by offering the wireless data plan at $75 a month, but with 15 gigabytes of high-speed data usage.  And not to mention a standard overage fee. The same class of unlimited wireless data plans is also available by Freedom Mobile and SaskTel.  But Canada’s major three mobile carrier networks have been slow to catch up with the unlimited data plans offered in the US.

The new wireless data plan by Rogers has certainly started a conversation among industry leaders. And opening new doors and tweaking the rules of foreign investment ultimately means decreasing the current prices. For the benefit of Canadian customers, more providers need to prosper in the market to create a more competitive environment.

Price Structure

Currently, Rogers’ infinite wireless monthly plan costs $75 for up to 10 gigabytes of data usage with unlimited data at reduced speed. What’s disheartening for Canadian customers is that the new plan specifically aims to target just high-end users with a 25% increase ($15) on the original price.

Companies should also devise wireless plans that are compatible with tourists. And many visitors across Canada keep their current providers to avoid Canadian wireless data plans. And that’s because carriers in the States and Britain offer a relatively fair price model with unlimited data usage.

Customer Response

The new unlimited wireless data plan by Rogers is now available. And the customer response in terms of experience is treading a thin red line between skepticism and positive outlook.

Rogers outlined that the shift in the price is part of the multi-year plan that intends to implement the upcoming higher speed 5th generation wireless network.

And many customers residing in Canada inherently believe that the available mobile plans are some of the most expensive in the world.
