If you are looking to switch your mobile phone plan to Koodo or Virgin Mobile, it may seem like a confusing choice. However, learning more about each provider might help you make the best choice for your BYO phone plan.
Once you pick the right plan for you, you also want to consider which carrier has the best service in your area. This should be a big factor in your decision.
Both Koodo Mobile and Virgin Mobile offer similar plans which often include Canada-wide calls, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited messaging within the country. The plan pricing is pretty much identical including the call, text and data inclusions.
However, Virgin Mobile has one benefit that Koodo does not, which is unlimited
worldwide text and unlimited picture messaging from Canada to the US. Koodo, on the other hand, only offers messaging within Canada.
1GB is often a starter plan and pretty basic for smart phone users. This plan is not recommended if you plan to stream music or videos. You also should only perform updates and downloads when you are connected to WiFi.
If you plan to do some music streaming and a small amount of downloads, then 2GB should be a good plan for you.
If you find that you are consistently on the Internet, stream videos and perform many downloads, then you want to select at least 3GB. However, if you plan on streaming HD video or playing mobile games, you want to move up to 5GB.
For those who do not plan to use the Internet with your phone, then you might consider a smaller plan. You will need some data because web app notifications, GPS and some other phone operations require data.
The lowest plan you could get is 100MB. However, you might want to consider going a little higher, even if you do not plan on using the Internet often.
The largest plan you could get would be 750MB. This will allow for some Internet browsing and social media usage. However, you want to be careful and keep an eye on how much data you are using.
When determining which carrier has the best service coverage for you, there are two things you want to consider.
First, check the coverage map. Look at both Bell and Telus networks’ coverage map and compare them to where you will be using your phone.
Next, ask your friends and family what coverage they have and if it works best near your home and work.
If one carrier has better coverage in your area, then it might be best to choose that carrier. However, if both have great coverage in your area, then you should choose whichever one has the best plan for you.
It is important to remember that the BYO phone plans at Koodo and Virgin are on a monthly basis and there are no long-term contracts. Therefore, you can switch provider at any time if you are not satisfied. You will have to pay an activation fee with is $5 for Koodo and $15 for Virgin Mobile.
